Yatzie was born in July 1951 on the San Carlos Indian Reservation in Arizona, in a small wooden cabin with a dirt floor where his parents were living at the time. He grew up surrounded by the love and guidance of his mother and grandmother, who raised him in the Apache Chiricahua tradition. Through their stories, he learned about his grandfather, his ancestors, and the struggles they endured in fighting for their freedom.

Those early years stayed with Yatzie throughout his life and deeply shaped both his worldview and his art.

An artist from a very young age, Yatzie naturally expressed himself through drawing and painting. His work reflected his people, their traditions, and the landscapes that surrounded them. He had a remarkable gift for capturing faces and expressions, working in a variety of mediums including oils, chalk pastels, and especially ink, which became his favorite medium for portraiture.

Yatzie’s creativity extended far beyond painting. He was also a turquoise jewelry designer, a flute player, and above all, a storyteller. Every piece he created carried part of a lived experience — whether his own or that of his ancestors. He loved sharing the stories and meaning behind his artwork with visitors and collectors, helping others learn about and connect with Apache traditions.

For Yatzie, storytelling through art was also a path toward healing. His work reflected both the beauty of his culture and the hardships his people endured, including the loss and degradation of their lands and environment. Through these stories and images, he offered moments of remembrance, understanding, and reconciliation with the past.

Love, resilience, and legacy remain at the heart of Yatzie’s artwork.
