In 1963 a group of friends got together to form what they dubbed “The Theater”.  This group of dedicated artists was part of the group that put on plays in the area and helped raise funds to build what became known as the Hi-Desert Playhouse in Joshua Tree, California.

In 1965 the group reorganized and became “Chaparral Artists”.

Today Chaparral Artists is a non-profit that is comprised of a diverse group of gifted and creative artists and art lovers throughout the Morongo Basin.  The group promotes art in the area with demonstrations, workshops, art shows and other activities.

Looking for Memorabelia and Stories

The officers of Chaparral Artists hope to represent the past as well move into the future in an exciting and graceful way. To do this, we hope to provide an accurate account of our own history to future membership. We need help! We encourage the public to share their memories of Chaparral Artists. Whether that means the sharing of scanned/photographed newspaper clippings or their personal recollections of a particularly memorable event, we want it all. Please submit your recollections and memorabilia to an officer by reaching out to us via email!

Thank you for  your help!

We support one another by providing opportunities to showcase art and the written word. Interested in learning a little more about our membership? Follow the hyperlinked title above to find more.

Chaparral Artists - Our Officers

Chaparral Artists is maintained by a group of people with the same goal of providing artistic supporting opportunities to all. It takes at least the love and energy of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. We do our best to maintain additional supportive roles such as Educational Outreach, Publicist, Hospitality, Membership, Social Media, Webmaster, and Newsletter Producer. For information on our current Board of Officers, follow the hyperlinked title above.

The Chaparral Artists organization is dedicated to the promotion of the Arts Culture and potential in the High Desert.  Chaparral Artists will provide art related programs and demonstrations, designed to further educate and stimulate the interests of youth and adult populations.

Chaparral Artists supports community functions.  They were regular participants in Turtle Days, worked with the local Chambers, and helped paint mini murals at the Joshua Tree Basin Water District Water-Wise Garden.

In May of 2013 Chaparral Artists were granted 501(c)3 status. We at Chaparral will advance our future plans of providing youth programs in the area.
