Chaparral member Myrtle Cassell presented a wonderful collection of mixed-media artworks throughout April at Desert Hills Presbyterian Church in Yucca Valley. Myrtle is truly a multi-talented wonder—she embodies creativity in every sense of the word. Constantly crafting, designing, and inspiring those around her, she turns her hands into tools of magic, shaping functional art and creating nourishing goods for the body and spirit. Whether she is painting, sewing, designing, or dancing, Myrtle infuses everything she touches with whimsy, grace, and joy.
Myrtle’s exhibit was nothing short of enchanting. Her pieces capture a sense of playful discovery that can sometimes fade with experience, reminding us of the wonder found in creating for the sheer love of it. Most of her works were watercolors, accompanied by a few mixed-media pieces and photographs that added delightful variety to the display.
Her artistic eye tends toward simplifying complex realities—drawing the viewer’s attention to essential lines and calming colors. There is a quiet kindness etched into each of her heartfelt creations. Her subjects often reflect her love of nature: delicate insects in flight, bundles of flowers, the moon rising over a twilight ocean, and soft, serene landscapes with quail at rest.
