Capturing the Spirit of the Desert

Chaparral member Bob Rufer showcased a collection of 6x6-inch photographs featuring local delights found along the iconic Route 66 corridor, showcasing the timeless beauty of the desert Southwest. Each image is a quiet tribute to the landscapes that first captured the artist’s heart through the pages of Arizona Highways magazine.

"That’s what did it. My grandfather subscribed in the 1950s, and I thought they were the most beautiful pictures of the most beautiful places I had ever seen. I've loved the desert ever since. And photography."

That love turned into a lifelong pursuit when he purchased his first SLR in 1978—a Nikon FM with a 15mm f/1.4 lens. The snap of the shutter, the satisfying click of the film advance—it all became part of the rhythm of capturing the land he loved.

Now working in the digital age, he still seeks the same magic: the quiet, the solitude, and the anticipation of sunrise in the wilderness. With nearly four decades of nature photography behind him, this exhibit is a heartfelt attempt to create not just pictures—but priceless images of the desert’s enduring grace.
