The Spring Judged Creative Arts Exhibit was displayed at Rainbow Stew from mid-April through mid-May 2026.

Our seasonal judged exhibits are open to the public and evaluated by invited professional artists and instructors, offering a wonderful glimpse into what our local creators have been focusing on. This year, we changed things up a bit by inviting an instructor from Copper Mountain College along with two colleagues to judge the exhibit collaboratively. This style of judging is common in larger exhibitions, as multiple judges bring different artistic backgrounds, perspectives, and preferences to the process.

While judges strive to evaluate artwork fairly and objectively, art is naturally personal and subjective. Styles, techniques, subject matter, and even color palette preferences can subtly influence how a piece is perceived. By having several judges work together to review the entire exhibit, those individual leanings tend to balance one another out — or at least that is the goal.

We were fortunate to welcome three judges from Copper Mountain College, and we sincerely thank them for their time, thoughtfulness, and consideration.

A total of thirty-two (32) entries were submitted by six (6) participating artists. We encourage everyone to help spread the word about future judged exhibits, as increased participation brings greater variety and inspiration. As participants, we naturally challenge one another to explore new subjects, experiment with fresh approaches, and revisit familiar mediums in creative ways. We learn from one another through observation, conversation, and shared artistic growth, and participation in judged exhibits helps all of us continue honing our skills.

Entries were judged as a single category, with awards presented for First Place, Second Place, Third Place, Honorable Mention, Best of Show, and the President’s Award, which was selected by members of the Exhibit Committee present on the day of judging. Funds collected during intake are used entirely toward prize awards and material fees.

The Judges

We did something different this time around to continue to support the relationship between Chaparral Artists and Copper Mountain College - we invited an instructor and two assistants and we are happy to share that Chloe Allred, Mary Dennis, and Sky Campbell rose to the challenge.

Chloe Allred stood in as lead judge. Chloe is a painter, writer, and educator based in Yucca Valley. She is a contributing artist and writer for the book, "We Believe You" (published by Henry Holt in 2016) and the cover artist for the poetry collection “Preposition” (published by Undercurrent in 2021.) Her paintings and writing have been featured in Orange Coast Magazine, Huffington Post, USA Today, and the BBC. She is a tenure-track art professor at Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree.

Mary Dennis is an interdisciplinary artist-based in Yucca Valley who loves to create! An alumni CMC and alumni CSUSB- Elementary Art Teacher. Mary's work is very expressive; she uses whatever medium that satisfies her expression or tells her story. Mary has shown her work at the 29 Palms Art Gallery, Curated Desert Fascinations Art Show. Works with Mojaveland and is a member of MACC.

Sky Campbell is an active student of CMC. No biography at this time has been received but we are happy to include it!

Thanks go to the participating creators that shared their work with us. To Rainbow Stew and all visitors that make these shows possible. And congratulations to the creators that placed!

If you find yourself out and about, make sure to stop by Rainbow Stew and enjoy the Judged show. Our exhibits are displayed for one month before we transition into the next show!

We all want to take advantage of this great space because it sees a constant stream of traffic throughout the week. Chaparral Artists see sales through this venue, so do not pass up the opportunity to hang your art with us when you can during these shows.

Stay unique, find ways to flourish, be the amazing person you are, and continue being YOU!
