Call to Artists: Honoring the Legacy of Brent Lewis

Chaparral Artists has been presented with a meaningful opportunity to participate in an upcoming honorarium celebrating the life and work of musician and percussionist Brent Lewis. Organizers hope this event will become the first in an ongoing Desert Legacy Series dedicated to honoring influential creative voices connected to our desert communities.

Artists are invited to create something entirely new inspired by the music, rhythm, and spirit of Brent Lewis. His music can easily be explored through YouTube, Spotify, and many popular streaming platforms, offering artists an opportunity to engage in active listening before beginning their work.

Both Chaparral Artists members and HDA participants are encouraged to paint, create mixed media works, or assemble photographic montages inspired by Brent Lewis’ distinctive musical style.

Known for expressive, rhythm-driven performances, Brent Lewis blended percussion with layered soundscapes rich in improvisation, mood, and texture. His work emphasized listening as connection, often evoking emotion through pulse, repetition, and subtle tonal shifts rather than rigid structure. His music naturally lends itself to abstract, intuitive, and emotionally driven visual interpretations.

The celebration is currently planned for Friday, July 17, 2026, at HDA in Yucca Valley. Organizers envision a warm community evening featuring food, drink, live music, dance performance, and an exhibition space for smaller two- and three-dimensional works honoring Brent Lewis and his artistic legacy.

Dates are approaching quickly, so pull out those creative tools and begin something new—or finish those beautiful works already in progress.
